Merson on Payet
I just don't think.....

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that he is not fully convinced by West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet.

Merson believes that the France international drifts in and out of games, and has suggested that he could suffer from second-season syndrome.

The former England international attacker has also suggested that opposition teams will work Payet out next season.

“Some people had Payet in the running for player of year,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star. “But while he’s a great player, he’s not in the running for me. He’s too much of a luxury player and I don’t think he stays in games enough.

“He drifts in and out too much for me. Payer’s had a great first season for West Ham, but they didn’t win anything and teams know all about him now. He’ll have to make sure he doesn’t suffer from second-season syndrome.”

Payet joined West Ham from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille in the summer of 2015 and has taken the Premier League by storm.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has scored nine goals and created 116 chances in 30 league appearances.

The Frenchman has a pass accuracy of 81% and a shot accuracy of 55%, and has won two headers, 67 dribbles and 16 tackles.

''Payets had a great first season for West Ham, but they didnt win anything''

He's not quite back to being the player he was before being assaulted by McCarthy

Quite a few on here have been saying the same, which is far worse to see.

Would you swap this seasons Hazard for this season Payet in the hope Hazard finds his form again?

Re: Merson on Payet
Don't think my following view is going to be popular but, I think Payet does go missing, in fact he clocked off very early in a number of games this season. He comes in and out of the game, at times, but so does every other player. He is not a player that will ever make defensive, lunging tackles or leap about defenders to head a ball into the back of the net.

What he does have is amazing and almost unique skills, with the ball at his feet, when he runs with it and particularly from a dead ball situation.

So, yes he can drift in and out of a game and has had a couple of poor games. The guy is human and all players suffer from this from time to time. His brilliance outweighs he shortfalls and long may it last as Payet is real class.

I think Merson is taking the song too literally. He is not better than Zidane, even if Zidane wants Payet at Madrid.

Re: Merson on Payet
Merson, its you that 'just does not understand'

And here is why

As a club we have been through the wringer for years and the long suffering support, in a critical season has a player who personifies 'the West Ham way'' - a supremely talented, deliverer of pure magic, provides the unexpected, gets the club and bonds with the fans - he is exactly what the club needed, a galvanising force the has glued the component parts from board, manager, team mates and fans alike

He has done far more by virtue of just being there than just play

And no, I get it, he is not Messi, he is 10m of Payet - pure unifying gold and the ilk of which your prancing dandies at Arsenal dont have and oh so need

So go fuck yourself and dont come back until you understand

Re: Merson on Payet
Very fair comment from Merson. Rather than taking it as a criticism of Payet though, I think the challenge is to the team to play to his strengths. We need more of the ball fed to him in space so he can do what he does well - we haven't done that enough imo.

My mate (Cornish Liverpool Fan) watched the match on Tuesday and said Payet played shit and that he didnt see what all the fuss was about....Apart from the 2 assists.

Has any player ever dominated every minute of every game played ?! Of course not. Games are won in key moments and Payet almost always delivers in these.

Re: Merson on Payet
If Bilic plays him in the centre as he did before his injury it will be easier to feed him the ball. Hopefully if we can bring other quality players in for the opposition to worry about so he can play back in the centre and get more space to do his thing.

Di Canio was brilliant, but still went missing in games and on the coach at times.

"Teams know about him now."
Thought they would have worked it out a lot earlier than over a season.
Probably raves over Ozil who in cricket speak is a flat track bully and what have Arsenal won this year?
Bloke is a prize knob who cant even string a simple sentence together and seems to gloat in how thick he is.

3 goals and 8 assists in the last 11 games.

If you can't see the consistent quality he brings to games, you'd be better off watching rugby, hockey or some other inferior sport.

I don't get this "teams have worked him out" bollocks.

Clubs watch video after video of their opponents. So much preparation goes into a match now. It really is a lazy accusation.

The man is a class act and anyone saying differently is trying to be too edgy.

basically most of the time i see the oppo double up on him... which means space is made for others!!!
